Sleeping dogs is set in a fictionalized version of Hong. The map contains a large city consisting of skyscrapers, offices and expensive shops and apartments. In the surrounding areas you’ll find the cheap apartment buildings and restaurants, the docks filled with house boats and factories, garages and warehouses. There are highways connecting all the areas of the city. Outside the city there are mountains with a temple and some mansions.

Pop art studio. You play as Wei Shen, a Chinese-American police officer who was tasked with infiltrating the triad. Not much is known about Wei at the beginning of the game but as you progress you learn more details about his past and what his motivations are. Wei’s backstory and supporting characters, as well as their interactions and voice acting, make the characters in Sleeping Dogs seem more three dimensional. Because the characters are portrayed so well the player is able to invest more in them and the story.

Thoughout Sleeping Dogs the player is able to upgrade Wei with new clothes that affect his stats, but also,as Wei is an expert martial artist, they are able to teach him new moves used during combat by pressing a series of buttons. The combat in the game is easy to learn but can take a while to master because of the layout of the controls. Tapping square will give you a light strike, while holding square will give you a heavy strike. Circle is grab, used to break an enemies guard and pressing triangle when prompted will cause we to counter. If the player presses the right button when near certain objects they will use environmental attacks to deal serious damage. The player is able to enter cover by pressing L1. L2 will aim the weapon Wei has equipped and R2 will fire the weapon, with R1 being used to reload. Pressing or holding x and running will allow you to vault and do parkour.
The driving on the game is admittedly not very good. The steering fells twitchy and with unrealistic acceleration and braking, the driving in Sleeping Dogs seemed for the most part a disappointing distraction from how good the rest of the game felt.
