I believe at 400MHz, that you have a first generation titanium Powerbook G4. Yes, pretty old, and largely abandoned now for support.
-There is nothing you can do for the processor.
-I think 512MB RAM is maxed
-a replacement optical drive may be difficult. I looked at www.macsales.com and it seems like available replacement drives may not work on 400MHz Powerbooks unless they came with burning capability. This would make me wary.
-I think OS10.4.11 would be the highest OSX possible. It's very expensive and only available from 3rd parties, like megamacs.com.
About the only things going for older units like this IMO are the ability to boot in OS9 and a built-in modem. Personally I would evaluate what work you need to get done, and purchase accordingly.

First of all, your friend kicks serious ass for giving you a PowerBook G4 IMO it's Apples best laptop design (12-17ยจ).
